Isuroon VISTA Tenant Organizer

Isuroon is a nonprofit impact organization that was founded in 2010 to offer reproductive healthcare services and advocacy to Somali women. At the time, the organization was totally focused on Somali women’s reproductive healthcare needs. Over time, Isuroon has broadened its focus to include women, girls and their families’ health, social connectedness, economic self sufficiency, and civic engagement. Minnesota has a large immigrant and refugee population that need help with filling out forms, language translation (when needed), and navigating systemic barriers. This is especially apparent in the realm of housing. Isuroon primarily serves the seven county Twin Cities Metropolitan Area with main offices located in Burnsville and South Minneapolis. Many of the first-generation Somali immigrant women and refugees from Afghanistan served by this project have limited English proficiency; others are bilingual. The name Isuroon signifies a woman who prioritizes self-care. With the courage of Somali women and the resources we provide, families in Minnesota can: - Overcome challenges like language barriers, racism, and religious intolerance - Successfully navigate a complex and unfamiliar healthcare system - Advocate for their own physical, social, and financial well-being, refugee needs, sexual health rights The Isuroon Tennant Organizer VISTA will increase the organization’s capacity to serve tenants clients by innovating ways to educate the community on financial health and their rights as renters, building connections with other organizations and housing providers, and designing systems to make it easier for staff to find available affordable housing to fit culturally specific client needs.
