24-25 Chicago 400 - Housing Action Corps - Archives

The Art and Archives VISTA will serve with the Chicago 400 Alliance in Chicago, IL from August 2024-2025. The Chicago 400 Alliance is part of the Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. The Chicago 400 Alliance is a campaign to address the crisis caused by public conviction registries and housing banishment laws—led by people with past convictions who are experiencing homelessness because of these laws. The Chicago 400 Alliance includes victim advocates, housing advocates, recovery providers, social service agencies, and policymakers who have witnessed how these laws undermine individual and community safety. Together, we build civic empowerment, connect people to resources and direct aid, and organize for policy change. In order to propose policy solutions, we need to better understand and articulate the housing and incarceration crisis. The Arts and Archives VISTA will collaborate with campaign members to create a media archive that documents the impact of registries and banishment laws, made by people who are directly affected. Media works may include audio, video, drawing, and oral storytelling. The VISTA will also design and launch a social media strategy in collaboration with member groups, and coordinate two art/media events. Our ideal candidate will have experience developing and implementing project plans and have worked in community outreach, non-profit management, or policy advocacy. Skills and expertise in media and communications are highly valued for the role. Applicants should be comfortable interacting with diverse groups, making phone calls, and developing potential campaign leaders. This position offers a $1,000 monthly stipend.

Member Duties : Illinois has 7 public conviction registries that impact a staggering number of residents; in our state, 1 in every 145 men–and 1 in 42 Black men–are listed on a registry. The Chicago 400 Campaign engages those directly affected in advocating for policy changes, and we need support to grow the organizing potential of our campaign. The Art and Archives VISTA will enhance our media archive and disseminate media made by people affected by registry and banishment policies. The VISTA will collaborate with project team members to build a media archive and establish protocols for members to document their experiences with the criminal legal system. They will host multimedia workshops to empower members with new media skills and plan two art and media events throughout the year. The VISTA will develop a social media strategy and create a system for managing social posts from those directly impacted. By the end of service, they will create a program manual to maintain the project.
