*MCVP – Public Health Systems Improvement VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to strengthen the public healthcare system in Montana by strengthening partnerships, improving the quality of public health services, and improving the targeting of public health interventions to address the social determinants of health. Montana is a rural state that has 46 counties with less than 10,000 residents. Much of the state qualifies as “frontier,” meaning there are fewer than 6 residents per square mile. Rural communities face challenges with health equity in a variety of ways, including but not limited to poverty, access to care, and other social determinants of health. Of the 56 Montana counties, 54 are designated as Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), 55 as Mental Health HPSAs, and 41 as Dental HPSAs. These issues of access are not limited to health care professionals, but also include public health department capacity and staffing, which impacts a community’s ability to receive the ten essential public health services in a high-quality manner. This VISTA project will move Montanans out of poverty by improving access to quality public health services resulting in a stronger public health system statewide.

Member Duties : The VISTA will research and develop evidence-based guides and resources for health jurisdictions across the state. The VISTA will provide technical assistance to Public Health Systems Improvement grant recipients and develop a technical guide and training process for future grant recipients. The VISTA will conduct, analyze, and develop a report of the findings from the foundational public health services assessment.
