Heart of the City Program and Fundraising Coordinator VISTA

Yvonne Starks Wilson Park is the only park in the KC Parks system that is named in honor of an African-American woman. Yvonne Starks Wilson was a former Dunbar resident that achieved recognition because of her unwavering desire to serve others. This park that now bears her name has a 100-year history in the Dunbar neighborhood and is in need of repair. The program is focused on assuring financial resources are available to support sustainable development, provide opportunities for public-private partnerships with KC Parks and other entities, cover future maintenance costs and ongoing community programming. The project will build capacity for the Dunbar neighborhood and KC Parks as well as encourage future neighborhood development.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will work to find financial resources and volunteers for programs and activities to support Yvonne Starks Wilson Park and coordinate fundraising activities that will provide sustainable support for the park. The project will build capacity for Heart of the City and KC Parks, provide a plan to support community development, improve community health and the built environment, and support youth development by providing enrichment opportunities. This work will create local access to an improved outdoor environment, address environmental justice, encourage healthy living, create economic opportunities in the surrounding community and encourage the flow of private capital into a historically disinvested community.
