*MCVP - Health and Human Services Prevention VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to develop a comprehensive resource of evidenced-based programs geared towards primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention efforts and to coordinate resources using a collaborative approach across State government. The state of Montana has a high rate of substance use and mental health concerns. According to the 2022 Prevention Needs Assessment, students who used marijuana were 11 times more likely to report using alcohol within the past 30 days; and 8 times more likely to report using other drugs within the past 30 days. There are many risk factors that may contribute to youth using substances. These may include attitudes favorable to drug use, perceived risk of drug use, friends use of drugs, depressive symptoms, academic failure, low commitment to school, parental attitudes favorable to drug use, poor family management, law favorable to drug use, and perceived availability of drugs. However, these are not the only risk factors we hope to identify across the continuum. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services wants to take a deeper dive into the prevention resource landscape and build the capacity for increased coordination and collaboration of prevention efforts across the state. This VISTA project will move at-risk youth in Montana out of poverty by developing a compendium of evidenced-based programs, resulting in collaboration across the state to prevent risky outcomes such as substance use and suicide.
