Urban Ministries Bilingual Health and Nutrition Educator

Wake County Cooperative Extension (WCCE) is hosting a Food Security VISTA Program in collaboration with four partner sub-sites. VISTA Members will perform one-year assignments to improve food security in Wake County and build the capacity of their assigned site(s). Urban Ministries of Wake County will be hosting a Bilingual Health and Nutrition Educator position to support their food security operations. The first objective of the Bilingual Health and Nutrition Educator will be to devise a system to promote healthy choices (e.g. signage reminders, recipe cards) and provide nutrition education (e.g. cooking classes) to pantry shoppers. This work will be key as Urban Ministries is considering opening the pantry for in-person shopping. The decisions the VISTA makes to implement nutrition promotion/education will lay the foundation for what the organization does going forward, and may be sustained by regular, dedicated volunteers over the next three years. This work will help low-income pantry shoppers make nutritious choices that will support their health over their lifetime and over generations. The second objective of the assignment is to identify all households in the system who may be eligible for SNAP and provide enrollment support to 100, so they may become successfully enrolled in SNAP. The initial identification and “backlog” clearing will allow Urban Ministries to regularly provide SNAP enrollment to the trickle of new pantry visitors via staff or a regular, committed volunteer over the next three years. This work will help many families to gain more reliable and robust access to food via food benefits.
