24-25 VMS - Green Homes Corps - Veterans

The Veterans Energy Efficiency & Empowerment VISTA will serve with Veterans Maintenance Solutions in Hudson, IL from August 2024-2025. Veterans Maintenance Solutions (VMS) is part of the Green Homes Corps initiative of Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Green Homes Corps members receive custom training, support, networking, and post-service employment opportunities in energy efficiency and clean energy, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. VMS is a unique initiative designed to address the housing needs of veterans while fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. VMS provides essential home repairs, educational resources, and assistance to empower and support veterans experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness in central Illinois. The Veterans Empowerment VISTA will expand our services to provide home maintenance and energy efficiency education to more veterans in our community. They will conduct outreach to identify veterans needing assistance, educate them about available resources, and enhance our intake process for repairs and housing assistance. Our ideal candidate is creative and has experience with office technology (computer, phone, etc). This position offers a $500 monthly housing stipend.

Member Duties : Throughout central IL, veterans and their families are at risk of becoming homeless due to prolonged maintenance issues or rising housing costs from inefficient utility systems or increased accessibility needs. The Veterans Empowerment VISTA will collaborate with VMS and the Central Illinois Housing Network to enhance our home maintenance and education programs, with a specific focus on energy efficiency and sustainable living. By the end of their service, the Veterans Empowerment VISTA will develop digital marketing materials, conduct outreach with veterans, and create a client management system for tracking program participation. They will also enhance our systems to support veterans experiencing homelessness with identifying options for short- and long-term housing.
