24-25 SSHC - Housing Action Corps - Fair Housing
 
 
 
The Fair Housing Testing & Outreach VISTA will serve with South Suburban Housing Center in Homewood, IL from August 2024-2025. South Suburban Housing Center (SSHC) is part of the Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. SSHC is dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination in our service area, fostering and promoting long-term diversity, stability, and inclusivity, with programs and services dedicated to addressing racial segregation caused by historic patterns of housing discrimination. We operate a host of Fair Housing Enforcement, Housing Counseling, and Education and Outreach programs in south metropolitan Chicago and northwest Indiana. The Fair Housing Testing & Outreach VISTA will expand the capacity of our fair housing testing program, as well as develop digital outreach to community stakeholders. A successful candidate will be passionate about social justice and fostering a diverse, inclusive housing market. They should be motivated to learn about federal, state, and local fair housing laws. Communication skills and attention to detail are crucial for the role. Familiarity with Chicago’s south suburbs and experience using digital marketing tools (Canva, Mailchimp) are a plus! This position offers a $150 monthly stipend.

Member Duties : Discriminatory housing practices and the systemic housing injustices disproportionately impact low-income communities and members of protected classes. The Fair Housing Testing & Outreach VISTA will strengthen our agency’s capacity to assist people facing these challenges by improving our volunteer tester program and increasing engagement with community stakeholders. Key duties include development of tester training materials, recruitment of volunteers, drafting monthly newsletters, and planning SSHC’s 50th Anniversary Fair Housing Month Event.
