24-25 Good Samaritan - Housing Action Corps - Outreach

The Outreach and Development VISTA will serve with Good Samaritan Inn in Decatur, IL from August 2024-2025. The Good Samaritan Inn is part of the Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. The Good Samaritan Inn creates social and economic opportunity through nourishment, gardening, and education. For over 40 years, we have served free, congregate meals to those in need. We are continuing to provide our vital emergency food services–such as our Noon Meal, Mercy Gardens, and Mercy Market programs–while opening a new chapter of long-term community impact through workforce development initiatives. The Outreach and Development VISTA will help expand our Mercy Market program and increase access to our services by implementing an engagement plan for the Mercy (Farmer’s) Market, developing a volunteer program, and creating a social media plan. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual who is passionate about systems and willing to put in the work to help us enter the next phase of our mission. They should be social media savvy and demonstrate good writing and communications skills. The role will include significant community engagement, so an ideal candidate would be excited to meet new people and work collaboratively. This position offers vision, dental, and life insurance as supplemental benefits.

Member Duties : Our services offer more than a meal–The Good Samaritan is a safe place to gather, find community, and shelter from the elements. Our meals supplement income so people have more money for things like childcare, utilities, rent, and prescriptions. The Outreach and Development VISTA will build the capacity of our foundational meal program while researching and implementing strategies to expand our growing workforce development initiatives. The VISTA will coordinate activities to educate and engage children, improve community health, and increase participation. They will engage the community through food-friendly activities, develop training materials, and create a volunteer engagement plan. The VISTA will launch a new social media account for our Do Good Donuts program and create social media templates. By the end of service, they will have built relationships with local partners to secure new sponsors.
