EngageCorps VISTA at Princeton's Pace Center

The John H. Pace, Jr '39 Center for Civic Engagement makes service and civic engagement a central part of the Princeton student educational experience, supporting students learning through sustained community engagement, experiential learning, and programs that introduce students to communities. The Pace Center's work is guided by a set of partnership principles as well as a student learning framework that centers on equity, empathy, and empowerment. The Pace Center supports nearly 800 first-year students and student leaders collaborating with 85+ community partners through Community Action, a multi-day small-group experience program of Princeton Orientation, as well as offers robust sustained student-led service programming throughout the academic year. An EngageCorps VISTA will have the opportunity to build the capacity of Community Action and its partnering organizations to increase the impact on low-income communities, especially low-income youth in Princeton and Trenton, NJ. Using a framework of place-based community engagement, the EngageCorps VISTA will (1) conduct a community assessment to identify opportunities to strengthen or expand partnerships and make recommendations for future programmatic action; (2) improve or design materials that provide historical and contemporary context for understanding the systemic systems impacting the Princeton and Trenton communities as a way of increasing awareness and knowledge; and (3) assist with volunteer recruitment and engagement enhancing the number of student volunteers that continue to volunteer post-Community Action in a more on-going and sustained way.
