PHENND Fellows-Food Sustainability Fellow

The Food Sustainability Fellow will work in the Hospitality Institute at Montgomery County Community College. In 2023, our first-year fellow developed & implemented the MC3 Food Recovery Program (FRP) which recovers, repurposes, packages & delivers food to our on-campus food pantry, located in the Wellness Center. This program was created to reduce food waste, fight food insecurity & lessen our contributions to climate change. We are passionate about making a positive impact on the planet and our community & we want you to share the same. The FRP partners with the Wellness Center & a local non-profit on free food distribution events that occur on campus, so the ability to collaborate with others is key. Next year’s Fellow should have a passion for community outreach & connecting people, especially college students, so strong & clear communication skills are a must. We’d like to create more partnerships- on & off campus- to grow the capacity of the FRP to recover & donate even more food to our community. This includes holding fundraising events. Candidate will facilitate the formation of a student group that can assist VISTA in recovering, preparing & delivering meals. The candidate must be able to coordinate partnerships, relationships & logistics. Candidate will work to educate the campus about our project, sharing their passion of sustainability, food insecurity & food systems. As the program grows, we see an opportunity for the VISTA to teach & train student volunteers basic meal preparation skills. The new Hospitality Institute (opening fall 2024) will house a teaching restaurant, student-run café & various cooking labs. Candidate must be flexible & comfortable with co-workers who have different roles, departments, working styles & personalities. The FRP is still being developed & our hopes are that the next VISTA can take the reins & help the program to grow. This requires strong critical thinking & leadership skills, creativity, innovation & persistence.
