Bilingual Volunteer Medical Clinic Healthcare Outreach

The Volunteer Medical Clinic provides comprehensive primary health care to people in our community who do not have access to medical care through public benefits or private insurance. Patients are not charged for visits to see a health care professional. Located in the Spanish Catholic Center in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Northwest D.C., the clinic dates to the 1960s. As the healthcare environment has changed, so has the clinic. Today it utilizes a team of over 100 active volunteers to serve patients who are low-income, do not qualify for Medicaid, and who do not have access to insurance. It is the only free clinic in DC. Ninety-five percent of our patients speak Spanish as a first language, and we provide interpreters for all our clinicians. The clinic is closely tied to Catholic Charities’ Health Care Network which provides specialty care services from safety-net clinics in the area. And because we believe in integrated care, dental, legal, and social services are also available at the clinic location. The Volunteer Medical Clinic is looking for a bilingual (English/Spanish) AmeriCorps Healthcare Outreach Volunteer who is organized, passionate about connecting patients with healthcare services, has good communication and computer skills, and can work independently and as part of a team. The volunteer will help connect patients to healthcare services by collaborating with the clinic director and will have the opportunity to network with area medical schools, volunteer clinicians, and participate in Catholic Charities staff enrichment. By doing direct service, they will be in the unique position to serve patients in a culturally sensitive way and gain clinical skills by working side by side with our clinicians. They will assist in a variety of patient-centered projects including leading patient eligibility intakes to connect our immigrant population to quality healthcare services and acting as a medical interpreter for our clinicians.
