University of Minnesota Morris, Seed Co

The Clifford J. Benson Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Minnesota, Morris coordinates campus-community partnerships that work toward more vibrant and equitable rural communities. Our project teams include college students, as well as faculty, staff, and community members who are eager to provide guidance and mentorship. This position addresses two key inequities in rural communities in Minnesota. First, about 40% of Minnesota’s rural residents experience food insecurity. Second, the rapid growth in immigrant populations–a more than 700% growth in the last ten years–has led to inequitable educational and community engagement opportunities. To address these needs, the Center has coordinated two initiatives with a high level of community, student, and faculty involvement: the Rural Intercultural Education Initiative and the Rural Food Systems Initiative. The VISTA will help the RIEI and Food Systems teams continue to improve Stevens County efforts and expand the outcomes beyond our county to other rural communities.
