PHENND Fellows-Cheyney Co-Curricular Experience VISTA

Established in 1837, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania continues to build on its legacy as America’s first institution of higher education for African Americans. Our Mission is to equip and empower students of diverse backgrounds to be visionary leaders in their chosen fields. We offer innovative approaches to teaching and quality academic programs that expose our students to pioneering ideas, research, and civic engagement. Our transformative approach to student development emphasizes the whole person, fostering success in the classroom, on campus, and in life. Workforce Development efforts are situated in the Strategic Partnerships & Career Pathways department. The current priority is developing competency-based training programs resulting in certificates, badging, and industry specific credentials that are a value addition for undergraduates and a tool for re-skilling and/or upskilling for current professionals. The CUCCE VISTA will support capacity building in workforce development.

Member Duties : The Cheyney University Co-Curricular Experience (CUCCE) VISTA will help develop the framework for Workforce Development initiatives targeted at assisting historically underrepresented students with preparing for high demand careers. This involves contributing to the plan & structure for operationalizing what it means to be Cheyney made. The VISTA will help create the framework for co-curricular activities for each level of student and identify micro credentials that will improve graduates' competitiveness in the job market. This approach to addressing the workforce needs and lack of skilled workers in specific areas where Black and Brown people are underrepresented will increase students’ confidence going into these settings, create a more diverse workforce, and improve their socioeconomic status. Experiential learning of this nature adds educational relevance which is demanded by today's student and helps overcome the struggles of low-income, first generation college students.
