NYS Attorney Emeritus Program

Fordham Law School's Feerick Center for Social Justice (FC) works with law students, alumni, and a broad range of partners on anti-poverty efforts. FC is committed to recruiting & retaining a team from different cultures, races, educational backgrounds, life experiences, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, ages, genders, and abilities, especially team members from groups that have historically been underrepresented in professional workplaces. FC and NYS Unified Court System (UCS) co-administer the NYS Attorney Emeritus Program (AEP). The AEP Coordinator places senior volunteer attorneys with NYS legal service organizations to serve New Yorkers with low incomes / low wealth with unmet civil legal needs. The VISTA is involved in all aspects of program development and implementation. The VISTA will help to continue to develop and implement Racial Justice Model Practices (RJMP), which promote anti-racist and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging/justice in volunteer management and pro bono services. This position is a part of a 6 member VISTA cadre at FC. FC’s Manhattan office will host 2 VISTA AEP Coordinators. VISTAs serving at FC must live within commuting distance (1.5 hrs) of Manhattan, NY before their service start date. This opportunity requires mandatory in-person service three (3) days per week. Required in-person days and times may vary based on programming. The other two (2) days can be in person or teleservice. This model is subject to change during the VISTA’s service term. The VISTA will have monthly check-ins with FC senior staff, weekly program meetings with FC and court senior staff, bi-weekly FC staff meetings, monthly professional development workshops, mid-monthly presentations led by the VISTA Leader, and opportunities to attend various academic programs and training sessions. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone interested in social justice and considering a career in public interest law.
