PCCE- Millersville University VISTA

Millersville University's mission is to provide a high quality education at an exceptional value. As a public institution, the University serves a population of students with demonstrated financial need, many of whom are low-income and first generation college students. The Y2 VISTA member will further capacity by connecting low-income (Work Study eligible) University students with meaningful on-campus and near-campus employment opportunities to equip them with critical career-readiness skills and provide them with a path to the workplace and post-graduation employment success. The VISTA member will coordinate the delivery of a professional skills development program for students and will build collaborative partnerships with near-campus community service agencies and organizations offering employment experiences for students. The VISTA member will collect information on existing resources and ongoing needs through collaboration with university and nonprofit stakeholders, offer a professional skill development program, and deliver workshops and activities to the university students in order to facilitate their attainment of full-time employment post-graduation. The project will enhance support for the students to build and reflect on transferable skills to improve their post-graduate job prospects. The VISTA member will supervise an undergraduate student employee and work closely with the university’s Career Center, Financial Aid, and Human Resources offices and representatives from community partner organizations offering federal college work study positions. As a result, the Millersville students will be better informed and better prepared to link their studies to college majors and real-world career options for college and career success post-graduation.

Member Duties : In Year 2, the VISTA will continue to expand opportunities for low-income students to secure on-campus employment with the university or Federal Community Work Study (FCWS) positions with near-campus community partners. The VISTA member will also work to improve and enhance low-income students' career readiness by coordinating the delivery of a professional skills development program. On-campus employment provides low-income students opportunities to develop essential skills that can be applied in their future careers, gives them access to mentors and resources that help them explore and pursue career paths they might not have considered otherwise, and increases their likelihood of engaging in experiential learning and career exploration. As a result, low-income students' post-graduation employment outcomes and economic prospects are improved.
