University of Florida GatorCorps: Cedar Key Site

We are looking for 2 or more full-time GatorCorps Members (half-time will be considered) for deployment to our host site in Cedar Key, Florida. Over the last 10 years, the University of Florida and the City of Cedar Key have forged a collaborative partnership to increase resilience, restore environmental functions, and pursue adaptation actions. UF GatorCorps members based in Cedar Key will work directly with local government, community partners such as Florida’s Nature Coast Conservancy, and faculty and staff at the UF/IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station to continue these efforts as well as many others related to ecological resilience and restoration. Lodging in Cedar Key will be provided at no cost to you as part of your service. Surrounded by salt marshes and estuarine waters along Florida’s Big Bend, Cedar Key is a small municipality with approximately 800 permanent residents. The community has developed an outsized influence on the state’s economy due to its successful shellfish aquaculture industry, which supplies over 90% of Florida’s total clam crop. However, Cedar Key’s location on the open Gulf of Mexico makes the community increasingly vulnerable to climate hazards such as storm impacts, flooding, and sea level rise. In 2020, the NOAA tide gauge in Cedar Key recorded the 4th highest rate of SLR acceleration in the country, and the local sea level has risen nearly six inches since 1992.
