Hazelwood Outreach and Engagement Fellow

The Hazelwood Initiative (HI) is a community development corporation (CDC) working to build a stronger Hazelwood community through inclusive community development. Guided by the Hazelwood Neighborhood Plan, HI staff and their network of committed partners work to put development in the hands of the Hazelwood community through the purchase and renovation of residential & commercial properties. As a member of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, HI collaborates with community-based non-profits to achieve economic justice and racial equity through revitalization efforts. PCRG empowers community development organizations in the region, providing resources like the VISTA program, which enhances organizational capacity while cultivating leadership. The program has been successful in advancing the careers of VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development through classes, conferences, etc. 70% of VISTAs have gone on to positions at community non-profits, while 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award.
