QUEERSPACE collective Community Engagement VISTA

The Minnesota Alliance With Youth VISTA program places members in nonprofits, government, and schools to create, connect, and leverage resources to address education inequities such as the opportunity and achievement gaps. We build capacity, coordinate integration of school and community-wide support for youth, and actively engage youth as agents of change. Our cohort meets regularly for professional development, team building, and peer support. This position is placed at QUEERSPACE collective. In the United States, LGBTQ+ youth represent some of the most vulnerable and underserved people in our country. More than 1.8 million LGBTQ+ youth ages 13-24 seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. — and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds. Additionally, while LGBTQ+ youth make up only 10% of the U.S. youth population, family rejection and lack of access to services contribute to LGBTQ+ youth disproportionately making up over 40% of the homeless youth population. Yet, research shows LGBTQ+ youth who report having at least one supportive adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the last year. QUEERSPACE collective’s mission is to create space for LGBTQ+ youth to feel safe and empowered to be their true selves. Our vision is for all LGBTQ+ youth to have a network of support to help them develop a strong sense of pride in who they are, where they come from, and where they want to go. Through mentorship, training, and advocacy, QUEERSPACE is working to build a constellation of community support where LGBTQ+ youth can thrive as their authentic selves. We are recruiting a Community Engagement VISTA to support our team through community engagement, volunteer management, administrative support, and fundraising to help boost awareness and support of our program in Minnesota and increase our organizational capacity to serve more LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
