AmeriCorps Backcountry Trails Program 2026

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? For over 45 years, the Backcountry Trails Program has partnered with federal land agencies in the Sierra Nevada and other mountain ranges in California to restore and provide access to wilderness trails. Our members learn firsthand about the work that goes into managing trail systems, sensitive ecosytems, and the logistical support for wilderness work. Our alumni have gone on to work storied careers in conservation, land management, wildland fire, and environmental leadership. WHAT WE DO: Each year, selected candidates leave behind the conveniences of modern life and venture into the mountains to spend five months doing some of the most exhausting, challenging, physically and emotionally demanding labor imaginable. We expect our members to work hard to produce quality work with minimal direct supervision; remain sober for the duration of the program; and build a healthy, supportive community founded on respect. Members also participate in work trainings and a curriculum program outside of work hours that covers such topics as: native fauna and flora identification, natural history, wilderness ethics, wilderness first aid, personal & professional development, and health & safety. There are no pre-requesities to apply, we welcome all skill levels and backgrounds. If you want to be on this adventure with us, then you absolutely have a place here on our crews!

Member Duties : Become a trail worker and learn a vast skillset unique to land management, conservation, and leadership. Your physical endurance and your capacity for building strong communities will be tested out here. You will also be completely disconnected from your phone, screen, and modern connectivity. You will live and work continuously in remote, backcountry locations on a crew of 12 to 17 diverse individuals performing extremely physically demanding trail construction, repair, and maintenance. Expect to hike every day to and from work anywhere from three to 20 miles in a day at a 3 mph pace while carrying up to 45lbs. You must effectively communicate with your crew members while building a healthy, supportive community. Members earn a $2,814 monthly stipend, free health care, and a $3,697.50 AmeriCorps education award upon completion.
