NSLC Membership Development

Pittsburgh’s Northside is composed of 14 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own history, issues, and volunteer organizations. In 1980, these 14 neighborhoods came together to establish the Northside Leadership Conference (NSLC). Since then, NSLC has provided a range of services pertaining to real estate and business development, public land enhancement, public safety, health and wellness, and communications and advocacy. As a member of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, NSLC collaborates with community-based non-profits to achieve economic justice and racial equity through revitalization efforts. PCRG empowers community development organizations in the region, providing resources like the VISTA program, which enhances organizational capacity while cultivating leadership. The program has been successful in advancing the careers of VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development through classes, conferences, etc. About 70% of VISTAs have gone on to positions at community non-profits, while the other 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award.

Member Duties : The VISTA’s service year will be spent identifying funding for neighborhood development projects and increasing connectivity between NSLC staff and community groups. The overall goal of the VISTA project is to develop a fundraising strategy for NSLC and its individual membership groups, assessing the health of member organizations to ensure that they maintain neighborhood connections. The VISTA will help to increase organizational stability, as well as fundraise for NSLCs youth extracurricular and affordable housing programs. They will serve alongside the Real Estate Director and the Health Improvement Partnership Coordinator to develop a neighborhood needs assessment and to tailor the fundraising strategy to support NSLC’s programming and organizational sustainability.
