City of Austin Emergency Management Emergency Shelter VISTA
 
 
 
The City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA program works with City departments and local nonprofits to build capacity, in order to provide resources and services the Austin neighborhoods and communities that may otherwise be left behind by Austin's historic disparities and future growth. The AmeriCorps Members serving with the City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program work in such diverse fields as education, health, waste reduction, and housing to cover the myriad ways poverty affects these neighborhoods and communities.

Member Duties : Create a system to analyze facilities to determine their effectiveness as emergency community shelters. Research emergency shelter protocols and laws to determine the requirements for effective emergency shelters. Use the gathered data to develop an assessment to grade potential new emergency shelter sites. Identify areas of Austin that would most benefit from emergency shelters, especially areas with low-income populations. Select 10 to 15 Austin-area facilities as potential sites to establish a new emergency shelter. Identify what modifications would be required to make the facility fully resilient, as well as utility connections and redundant power needs. Open one new emergency shelter or information/assistance center in the Austin area.
