Afterschool Literacy & Sports VISTA - UGA VISTA Network

The University of Georgia (UGA) and the Clarke Co. School District (Athens, GA) have partnered to create a new program serving low-income kids in 3rd through 7th grades with after-school programming that includes both literacy tutoring as well as structured instruction in team sports for boys and girls (football, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, and volleyball). Hundreds of participating kids will be served throughout the year at local elementary and middle schools with support from UGA student volunteers and service-learning courses (honors, kinesiology, education, etc.). Two AmeriCorps VISTAs will work with the program coordinator to help build program capacity, including recruitment, training and supervision of UGA student volunteers, communication with partnering schools, program evaluation, and other activities. These VISTAs are part of a larger group of AmeriCorps members serving through UGA's AmeriCorps VISTA Network.
