Urban Ministries of Wake County Food Security Specialist

The Objective of this assignment is to serve as Food Security Specialist in two key areas: (1) Hunger and nutrition operations activities and (2) Volunteer engagement activities. The hunger and nutrition operations activities will focus on launching systems for data collection/management and supporting the strategic goal of building UMWC’s organizational capacity. The member will assist in the implementation of software to improve data collection/management and train staff and volunteers on how to engage clients and shoppers, perform data entry and create reports. These project activities will grow the capacity of UMWC’s Hunger and Nutrition Program to have accurate, efficient systems in place to report to funders. The hunger and nutrition program seeks to be responsive to the changing needs of the community and will explore continuation of the drive thru pickup model, re-establishing a client choice pantry model, reviving implementation of the Food Bank’s Healthy Pantry Initiative, and evaluate food distribution to partner agencies. The goal of the Volunteer Engagement activities will be to increase the number and engagement of active volunteers enrolled in the volunteer program, enhance the connectedness of new and existing volunteers to UMWC staff, and raise awareness of volunteer opportunities amongst prospective groups in the community (e.g. civic groups, congregations, businesses). With more volunteers, UMWC will have the capacity to pack more food boxes for pantry patrons, serve more meals to unhoused guests at our Helen Wright Center for Women, and provide more free medical care to low-income residents. The Member will work to increase connection of point of service volunteer activities and the larger community and societal challenges of hunger, access to healthcare, and homelessness. The Member will be key in forging relationships with potential volunteers, informing and energizing the community and re-engaging lapsed volunteers.
