VISTA Anchorage Youth Court Marketing, Events, and Grants Co

Anchorage Youth Court (AYC) is a non-profit diversionary program for youth in grades 7 - 12 who participate in a justice system run by and for peers. Local youth take on the roles of attorneys, judges, bailiffs, clerks, & jurors during the trials. AYC members develop & apply an understanding of the law through legal education, AYC Bar Association membership, & actual participation in AYC court hearings. AYC is highly beneficial because diverted youth are afforded a chance to resolve legal problems in a highly personalized and relevant manner without receiving a formal juvenile record, & the community receives valuable work service as redress. To become a member of Anchorage Youth Court, youth complete a basic legal principles and practices course and then sit for and pass a youth bar exam. The AYC Bar Association meets quarterly, and members participate in activities designed to provide a broader perspective of the judicial system and restorative justice. Activities include workshops, mock sentencing, and guest speakers from the legal community. Approximately 30% of youth members are in families experiencing poverty. This project works to benefit low-income communities by increasing youth membership from low-income families so that those youth have a consistent, positive out-of-school activity in which they can engage and develop leadership skills. A successful VISTA in this non-profit is excited not just to work with youth as a capacity builder, but also as a positive role model. As a result, the VISTA must possess a strong ability to relate to and support young people, flexibility and creative thinking skills, and a passion for youth service work. *This service opportunity comes with a *free* big, dorm-style room in a brand new, secure bldg!*
