23-24 Jefferson Land Trust Habitat Enhancement Crew Member

This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Jefferson Land Trust is a grassroots community organization with a mission of “helping the community preserve open space, working lands, and habitat forever”. We accomplish this work by permanently protecting and caring for properties to promote species and structural forest diversity, abundant wildlife habitat features, healthy waterways and wetlands, productive agricultural soils, and ecologically-sensitive forestry. These conservation lands need our ongoing care not only to improve current habitat conditions, but also to help prepare these special places for future impacts of a changing environment. Habitat enhancement crew members will accomplish these goals by creating new nurse logs and standing snags, by thinning overly dense forests, by increasing plant species diversity through plantings, by removing invasive plant species, and by monitoring current conditions and wildlife use, among other tasks. Jefferson Land Trust will interview for these two position openings in July - August 2023.

Member Duties : The two Habitat Enhancement Crew Members will support the long-term conservation mission of Jefferson Land Trust by supporting the stewardship of those lands in our care. Crew members will work together, with Land Trust staff, and with community volunteers. Together we will help increase forest and stream resilience by increasing habitat, species, and structural diversity on a number of permanently protected nature preserves and forests. Habitat restoration tasks will include removal of invasive (noxious) weeds that threaten native plant success, ecological forest thinning with chainsaws (training provided), creation of downed logs, standing snags, and habitat piles, restoration planting, trail decommissioning, and monitoring and mapping of current conditions. Public outreach tasks will include leading public education programs, developing materials for youth education programs, and representing Jefferson Land Trust at community events.
