Iowa Youth Writing Project VISTA

The Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) is an arts outreach organization based at the University of Iowa that empowers, inspires, and engages K–12 youth throughout the state using language arts and creative thinking. We provide one-of-a-kind writing, publishing, and creative learning opportunities to Iowa’s children and teens. To ensure that all young people can participate, the IYWP provides programs at little or no cost, thanks to the time, energy, and creativity of IYWP volunteers; partnerships with local organizations and institutions; and the generosity of community members. The Community Outreach & Engagement Coordinator will support the health and longevity of our organization by rejuvenating our blog and social media presence; keeping community members, donors, and other stakeholders informed about IYWP events and achievements; and leading several community-engaged fundraising efforts throughout the year. The VISTA will also supervise and mentor a team of undergraduate Advocacy & Engagement Interns, who will be tasked with deepening the IYWP's community impact by attending local school board meetings and community forums, as well as blogging and contributing to the IYWP’s outward-facing presence. As a culminating project, this VISTA will celebrate the IYWP's achievements with the creation of a comprehensive annual report. The VISTA member will gain invaluable experience in arts outreach organizing, grant writing and fundraising, and communications/media strategy. Applicants should demonstrate a high level of reliability, be able to work collaboratively and independently, and take the initiative to lead and see projects to completion. Applicants must also have high-quality written communication skills and be eager to learn.
