Boston Medical Center/StreetCred (Financial Navigator)

StreetCred's mission is to build prosperity and improve health and health equity for families and children by leveraging trust in health care providers and empowering people to confidently navigate financial systems. StreetCred, a program of Boston Medical Center (BMC), focuses on underutilized opportunities for economic stability and mobility that have been associated with improvements in health equity. It has been operating free tax preparation services in pediatric clinics since 2016. The program successfully scaled from one site in Boston to a national technical support network (the Medical Tax Collaborative) of 18 health clinics and hospitals in 9 states & D.C. StreetCred’s Medical Tax Collaborative has returned over $14 million to over 6,000 families. Our suite of services for parents of newborns at BMC also includes financial coaching and enrollment in an economic bundle: tax preparation plus 529 College Savings Accounts (CSAs), paid family leave, WIC, SNAP, and the BMC Food pantry, and HUD’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS). Our Public Health AmeriCorps (PHA) project embeds these services in our pediatric clinic to promote economic justice and health equity. PHA members empower families to take advantage of free money available to them via the above economic bundle while also empowering them to work toward financial goals via individualized financial coaching. Working closely with the StreetCred team, including our AmeriCorps VISTA member, PHA members will work in our clinic to conduct strategic outreach and provide direct support to pediatric families. StreetCred StreetCred at BMC is recruiting six part-time PHA members to begin in Sept 2023 and continue through Aug/Sept 2024. This opportunity is an excellent fit for pre-health students interested in gaining experience in a medical setting.

Member Duties : Members will work as financial navigators in the Pediatric Primary Care clinic. We provide economic opportunities to families as a part of their routine health care visits during the first few months of a child’s life to improve maternal-child health equity. Members will be responsible for directly connecting families to free money available to them (tax credits, seed money for 529 college savings accounts; paid family leave; food assistance programs (SNAP, WIC, and BMC’s Food Pantry); FSS. Members will become IRS-certified tax preparers to equip them for this role. PHA members will collaborate with the medical team and other StreetCred program stakeholders, including financial coaches, patient navigators, VISTA members, and IRS-certified tax preparers to implement the economic bundle.
