'23 Mother Earth Farm Summer Associate VISTA

According to Feeding America, 1 in 10 people in Pierce County is food insecure. Emergency Food Network (EFN) is Pierce County’s emergency food distributor, providing our network of more than 75 partner food pantries, meal sites, and shelters with more than one million pounds of food each month. Our partner food pantries are currently serving more than 190,000 visits each month. EFN procures food from a variety of sources including donation, bulk purchasing, and government commodities in order to provide our partners with a consistent supply of diverse and nutritious food. We also grow food at our Mother Earth Farm, providing our network with local fruits and vegetables grown using organic practices. Growing food allows us to provide partners with produce at peak ripeness and allows us to provide our partners with the types of fruits and vegetables their guests want. This AmeriCorps opportunity is a project of Harvest Against Hunger, which connects local growers, food banks, and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. The Harvest VISTA program finds innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce for food bank clients. The Summer Associate program will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks.

Member Duties : Emergency Food Network (EFN) operates Mother Earth Farm, an 8-acre farm in the Puyallup Valley, to provide fresh food. In a year, we grow more than 50,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables for our neighbors in need. Summer Associate VISTA members will learn about and carry out all aspects of organic fruit and vegetable production including seeding, cultivating, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and packing. These members will also work alongside volunteers and will be responsible for maintaining a welcoming environment, giving direction, and answering questions when needed. This term aligns with a crucial growing period at the farm. Their contribution will make all the difference in our ability to meet our goals for fresh food distribution.
