United Way of Central Ohio VISTA Program Coordinator
For 100 years, United Way has worked to build a stronger, more equitable central Ohio by helping families thrive and students succeed. United Way invests in local nonprofits that provide individuals and families with resources and support needed to transition from poverty to financial stability. We focus on helping low- to moderate-income families coping with food insecurity, housing instability, lack of access to high-quality childcare and barriers preventing children from graduating from high school. United Way recently relocated to the Arena District, where we share space with several other nonprofits at the Nationwide Community Impact Center. Reading proficiently by the end of third grade is the greatest predictor of high school graduation. Students not proficient in reading by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Failure to obtain a high school diploma is inextricably connected to poverty. Without a high school diploma, young adults face extremely bleak economic and social prospects. Success by Third Grade is a communitywide movement focused on ensuring Franklin County children read proficiently by the end of third grade as measured by the state’s English Language Arts assessment tool. SbTG focuses on three areas that contribute to academic success: health and well-being; home and family stability and a safe and supported school environment. United Way serves as the backbone organization for SbTG. Backbone activities include stakeholder engagement, data collection and analysis, coordination and fundraising. VISTA member will support United Way and Future Ready Columbus. Both organizations are committed to improving academic outcomes for Franklin County children. United Way and Future Ready Columbus mobilizes parents, guardians, early childhood educational professionals and community members to help children enter kindergarten and move through third grade, ready to learn and thrive.
