Wake County Food Access Specialist
 
 
 
Wake County Cooperative Extension is a network connector in our county. The Food Access Specialist will support the goals and outcomes of the 2023 Food Security Plan Update. The VISTA will improve access to culturally appropriate, nutrient dense, and locally produced foods. Additionally, the member will build the capacity and of farmers markets and community programs providing fresh produce to our emergency food partners. We anticipate strong partnerships with the following types of organizations: Farmers Markets, Food Pantries, Food Banks, Community Gardens, Food Sovereignty groups, Farmers, Food Hubs, Hunters for the Hungry, Hungry Harvest, Ripe Revival, and various departments in municipal and county government.

Member Duties : The VISTA will support community partners with sourcing more fresh and culturally appropriate food items, reduce food waste, and increase public awareness of food insecurity in Wake County. The member will have the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of partner organizations and interface with gardens, farmers markets, food pantries, food banks, and additional hunger relief organizations. The member will link volunteers to appropriate partners and establish clear roles and responsibilities for volunteer recruitment. Additionally, the VISTA will build relationships with local food suppliers to decrease the amount of food going into landfills and connect emergency food providers with sources of otherwise wasted foods.
