2023 Construction Volunteers Leader Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Construction and Volunteer Summer Associates will be hosted by Will County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH), located in Joliet, IL. WCHFH is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website. Since 1988, WCHFH has partnered with people in Will County to help them build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through this process, homeowners achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families. We are recruiting a cohort of Construction and Volunteer Summer Associates to coordinate and prepare construction job sites alongside and under the direction of the WCHFH site supervisor. They will greet volunteers, participate in morning briefings, train volunteers in the tasks of the day, and work alongside them. Summer Associates will advocate for the importance of affordable housing and our mission, ultimately working to recruit first-time volunteers that grow into advocates of our programs and long-term volunteers. Our ideal candidate does not need a background in construction, as we will provide comprehensive training in construction activities. They need to enjoy working with people, teaching, and mentoring. We look for people who are team players and have a good sense of humor. Exceptional candidates will demonstrate a history of learning and discovering new solutions, as well as accomplishing challenges with a group.

Member Duties : The Construction and Volunteer Summer Associates will start their service with onboarding about Habitat’s mission and history and training on construction materials, tools, and methods. They will support and eventually lead daily volunteer orientation, explaining WCHFH’s programs and demonstrating safety protocols. Summer Associates will supervise groups of volunteers, train them on construction tasks, and work alongside them. Throughout their service, Summer Associates will act as affordable housing advocates and encourage volunteers to return and expand their involvement with Habitat.
