2023-2024 Community Education Coordinator VISTA

This Community Education Coordinator VISTA will be hosted by Connections for the Homeless, located in Evanston, Illinois. Connections for the Homeless is part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website: housingactionil.org/americorps. While Connections for the Homeless is a direct service organization, it cannot fulfill its mission if more affordable housing does not become available in our region. The agency’s advocacy program, Joining Forces for Affordable Housing, works to improve policy, provide community education, and activate the community to remove barriers to affordability and increase the supply of affordable housing. The Community Education VISTA will increase the reach of Joining Forces for Affordable Housing by designing and implementing community outreach and education efforts. The VISTA will work with human services agencies to engage their leaders, staff, and the people they serve in learning more about affordable housing and sharing the impact that the lack of such housing has on them. They will design and conduct presentations to communities of faith in the region, inviting congregation members to learn and take action in support of affordable housing solutions. They will also expand Joining Forces’ profile in the community by assuring our visible presence at community events. The ideal candidate will have experience leading workshops and focus groups, interviewing people, and/or teaching, as well as in creating materials to support this work. Experience working with communities of faith and human services agencies would be beneficial, and excellent organizational, calendaring, and interpersonal communications skills are a must.
