Summer VISTA Guest Advocate
 
 
 
Heal House of Iowa serves the unhoused population in Warren County to address immediate needs for food and shelter, and to engage the guests in developing a practical path toward permanent housing and employment. Currently, the Heal House board and volunteer advocates collaborate with local supportive community resources to motivate each guest to dive deep into personal strengths and life challenges to achieve sustainable positive change in the quality of their lives. The VISTA will assist Heal House staff in this process. He/she/they will gain a detailed view of the big picture problem facing many urban and rural communities: homelessness. The VISTA will learn in-take and other processes and procedures required to access federal programs for housing and food assistance. They will also become familiar with state and local resources guests can utilize to gain employment, health services, and other supports. In addition to developing a professional and technical skills in human services, the VISTA will also enhance their empathy and real understanding of the guests’ individual lives. Ideal candidate must live in or around the Indianola area. Housing support is offered. Position open until filled.

Member Duties : The VISTA will 1. Learn the Heal House in-take process and assist the staff in completing and monitoring aspects of the guest's life plan 2. Meet and collaborate with local agencies to learn about the services the agencies provide 3. Assist the guest with accessing community resources to support plans and goals 4. Research new state and local resources that may be a support to Heal House of Iowa 5. Provide transportation in special circumstances to guests who need to get to appointments related to their life plan.
