Financial Education is an empowering skill which can help move families out of poverty and towards self-sufficiency. The FDIC Money Smart for Adults and the Emotional Side of Spending curriculums provide proven educational opportunities to improve financial literacy. Using the skills learned in these workshops, individuals will participate in savings challenges to apply their skills in their daily lives. The program consists of a series of four classes. The first class will focus on: “Our relationship with money”; “Ways we can save, but often do not employ”; and “The challenges we face when attempting to save.” The second class will focus on “Accountability and ways we can manage our spending”; “Ways to set up a budget”; and “Introduction to budget sheet” Participants will engage in One-on-One Meetings to: Addressing barriers to success; Review methods which have been successful; Answer questions; Review current savings and budget; and adjust budget and savings techniques, if necessary. The third class will focus on: “Savings - The Why’s & How’s to do it”; “Barriers/ Challenges of savings”; and “Incentives/ encouragement/ accountability for saving” The fourth class will be a celebration of success in the budget challenges as well as planning for sustained budget planning and accountability.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps Members will use the FDIC’s Money Smart curriculum to provide financial education that will influence and enhance client’s financial skills and ability to create positive banking relationships. The AmeriCorps Member will utilize volunteers to role play, translate learning materials, act as an assistant instructor to ensure a high level of client engagement. The AmeriCorps member will administer pre/post surveys at the beginning and the end of each educational experience to assess the knowledge increase of clients after participating in the module.
