2023-2024 Service Development VISTA

The Service Development Specialist will be hosted by Unity Parenting and Counseling, located in Chicago, IL. Unity Parenting and Counseling is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Unity Parenting and Counseling is a multi-service social service agency that is committed to supporting the most underserved individuals and families in Chicago, including unaccompanied youth (ages 18-24), both single and parenting, who are experiencing homelessness. As is true of the overall homeless population in Chicago, the vast majority of youth served are persons of color, and all are trauma-impacted and living in poverty. Youth served by Unity Parenting and Counseling currently reside in our shelter or transitional supportive housing programs, where they can reside for a maximum of two years. The Service Development Specialist will research, design, and develop a multi-faceted employment program to help youth develop skills, career goals, and a career plan to attain and retain employment.This unique program will support youth in securing the income necessary to move out of homelessness into self sufficiency. The Service Development Specialist will also collaborate with agency staff to identify appropriate cash and in-kind resources to implement the employment program, including grant writing, social media, and fundraising. The applicant must be creative, eager to learn and build something new, and committed to making a difference in the lives of young adults and families experiencing homelessness. The ideal candidate also demonstrates excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

Member Duties : The Service Development Specialist will kick-start a diverse and multi-faceted employment program for youth experiencing homelessness on the South Side of Chicago. This unique program will support youth in securing the income necessary to move out of homelessness into self sufficiency. These youth currently reside in UNity’s shelter or in its transitional supportive housing programs where they can reside for two years at the max. They will research other programs, survey homeless youth and community residents, and develop the program plan and scope. Once the program is approved by Unity Parenting and Counseling, the VISTA will work with management and staff to identify resources necessary for program implementation including fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and marketing activities.
