2023-2024 Homeownership Education and Counseling VISTA
 
 
 
The Homeownership Education and Counseling VISTA will be hosted by Family Housing Resources (FHR) located in Tucson, Arizona. FHR is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. The Homeownership Education and Counseling VISTA is part of the Housing Counseling Corps and will receive customized training, support, guidance, networking, and post-service employment opportunities in the housing counseling field. Family Housing Resources (FHR) has been serving greater Tucson and Benson, Arizona for the past 30 years working on increasing access to affordable housing and expanding the ability of people to build long term wealth through homeownership. We envision a community with equal access to quality, affordable housing, and pathways to increased wealth and financial freedom. In 2022, we helped 19 families access $588,000 in Down Payment Assistance (DPA). Our clients were 53% Hispanic, 13% Black, and 6% multi-racial. We serve 60% women. In total we served 320 people through our home buyer education, pre-purchase counseling and DPA programs. The Homeownership Education and Counseling VISTA will learn, evaluate, and develop educational opportunities and counseling for FHR’s homeownership program to increase our capacity to recruit and serve low-income homebuyers who have been historically discriminated against in the home purchase process. They will also gain a comprehensive understanding of housing counseling and train to complete the HUD certification exam for housing counselors. Our ideal candidate will have a willingness to learn, ability to multi-task, work independently as well as on a team. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will learn, evaluate and develop educational opportunities and counseling for our homeownership program, as well as train to take the HUD housing counseling certification exam. This VISTA member will review our current educational offerings, participation, and cultural appropriateness, as well as research and develop new alternatives. This member will also increase capacity of the organization by reviewing current intake process, streamlining education and systems where possible. Work will include developing a way to tell the story of the impact of homeownership and education to help sustain the organization's support. VISTA will develop volunteer roles, training and recruitment for the program.
