2023-2024 Housing Counseling and Communications VISTA
 
 
 
The Housing Counseling and Communications VISTA will be hosted by Belmont Housing Resources for WNY, inc. (Belmont) located in Buffalo, NY. Belmont is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. The Housing Counseling and Communications VISTA is part of the Housing Counseling Corps and will receive customized training, support, guidance, networking, and post-service employment opportunities in the housing counseling field. Founded in 1977, Belmont is the leading advocate for quality affordable housing in Western New York, providing services to over 13,000 households annually. Belmont’s services include housing choice voucher administration, housing development, property management, and housing counseling and financial capabilities. Since 1999, we have operated the largest and most diversified HUD Housing Counseling Program in Erie County, advising over 1,500 families annually. Our counseling services include General Housing Counseling and Financial Education, Foreclosure Prevention Counseling, Post-Purchase Counseling, Home Equity Conversion Mortgage Counseling, and Matched Saving Programs. All of Belmont’s housing counseling follows the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling, and all counselors are certified. The Housing Counseling and Communications VISTA will build the capacity of Belmont’s Housing Counseling Program by assessing current systems and developing new strategies for marketing and outreach. They will also gain a comprehensive understanding of housing counseling and train to complete the HUD certification exam for housing counselors. Our ideal candidate would be excited to work within the community and perform public speaking/outreach, have familiarity with technology such as Microsoft or other platforms, and enjoy working independently through guided tasks.

Member Duties : The Housing Counseling and Communications VISTA will evaluate current marketing and outreach materials, recommend new communication tools and strategies, and create content for social media and other platforms. Principles of human centered design will be taught and/or strengthened to build the materials with those that will be served through the programs. The VISTA will also research available rental opportunities in response to the community impact of COVID-19 and create a curriculum for a rental and fair housing workshop. They will locate potential volunteers and community partners, as well as create a guide for staff and volunteers to promote the Housing Counseling Program at events.
