Phillips West VISTA Tenant Organizer – Housing Stipend

For nearly 20 years, the Phillips West Neighborhood Organization (PWNO) has served as the Phillips West neighborhood’s passionate advocate. Phillips West has a rich history of community organizing and cultural development in connection with the other Phillips neighborhoods. As one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Minneapolis, PWNO takes a grassroots, social justice approach to advocating for the residents of the neighborhood and the surrounding community. On the northern border of Lake Street, the Phillips communities are filled with historic sites, businesses, art installations, and a community dedicated to justice and autonomy. This program will work to develop PWNO’s housing program, including the creation and operations of tenant association(s), participation and development in quantitative and qualitative research, creative visioning for a more just housing landscape, and the facilitation and development of relationships with influential institutions within the neighborhood, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the country. The Phillips West VISTA Tenant Organizer will be tasked with the exciting opportunity to see the building, launching, and maintenance of social justice programming and will develop skills and connections that are applicable in various social welfare fields and beyond. The Tenant Organizer will join a team of community leaders to assist in extending the organization’s capacity and realizing the potential of community power! PWNO is dedicated to working with our VISTA Member to ensure their own development and sustainability. As such, we are committed to providing a housing stipend and connecting the VISTA to as many resources throughout the city as possible. For more information about PWNO, please visit phillipswest.org.

Member Duties : The Tenant Organizer will facilitate communication, both virtual and in person, with community members and partners to develop PWNO’s housing program. Through research, both quantitative and qualitative, the Organizer will collaboratively develop a strategic plan to institute a sustainable, yet flexible, structure for the housing program, keeping in mind the cultural diversity of the neighborhood. Most importantly, the Organizer will work to empower tenants and volunteers to become leaders in PWNO and the housing program to ensure the longevity of participation and to achieve the goal of community empowerment. Beyond community engagement, the Organizer will work with PWNO to network with non-profit organizations, government agencies, small business, and large corporations in order to ensure fiscal and programmatic development. The Organizer will assist in writing proposals, grants, and reports for internal and external use to alter the housing landscape.
