*BMVP - Enhancing Mentor Recruitment and Training
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yellowstone County aims to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. According to U.S. Census data, approximately 11% of Billings households are in poverty, and children under 18 make up over 29% of the city’s population. Children living in poverty are more at-risk for facing developmental and social challenges and often have less access to supportive adult role models because of their familial income ( Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yellowstone County currently serves over 150 youth each year and still maintains a waitlist of about 60 children yearly. Most of the youth on the waitlist are males waiting for an adult male mentor, and male mentors' recruitment is not currently meeting the demand. Youth mentoring, specifically in Yellowstone County, has been noted to increase life skills among the youth participants. Youth mentees report an increase in academic performance and a decrease in school discipline instances, an increase in emotional regulation and a decrease in depressive symptoms, and an increase in family and school connectedness and a decrease in maladaptive behaviors (involvement with police, substance use, illegal activities, bullying). In addition, 96% of youth served by the organization in 2022 were able to identify at least one important adult in their life. The results observed by participants show the preparation of soft skills among mentees while enrolled in the program. This project will ensure that all volunteers are professionally recruited, trained, and supported in order to ensure quality interventions are in place to serve children in need. Children with access to positive role models will develop resilience skills, be encouraged to reach their potential, and be more prepared for higher education or a future career that increases the opportunity for self-sufficiency.
