*BMVP - Full STEAM Ahead: Expanding Education

Wise Wonders Children’s Museum’s mission is to engage curious, creative, and scientific minds in a playful learning environment for all children and families. At least 3,500 children in Billings are experiencing life in poverty; and Wise Wonders Children’s Museum is located in an area with a 45% poverty rate. Children living in poverty have less access to science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) educational programming and opportunities outside of the classroom. Additionally, one study found that students often lose interest and motivation in education because the curriculum does not have a real-world application. Lack of engagement in education has a significant impact on future financial stability. Students that do not finish high school earn 30% less than their diploma-holding peers. Many experts are calling for major investments in science education in order to empower new generations by helping them move forward and out of their economic hardships – so it is crucial to continue enhancing programs like those offered at Wise Wonders. A VISTA that supports the development of STEAM projects at Wise Wonders will expand and increase partnerships, community awareness, and outreach techniques that ensure access is expanded for youth most in need. By bolstering programs that provide children with hands-on learning experiences, opportunities are created to provide specialized attention and confidence building that could continue into a passion for life-long learning and development into adulthood. This project will help alleviate poverty by giving youth in need the skills and encouragement to embrace educational STEAM opportunities and to build skills that will help them be more successful in school, work, and life.
