SUM Associate, VISTA Horizons Student Enrichment Program-HFS

Horizons at Foote advances educational equity through a robust academic and enrichment program that builds on long-term partnerships with families and communities to provide a joyful, safe, and inspiring learning environment that empowers students from New Haven Public Schools to thrive in an ever-changing world. Diversity, equity, belonging, and justice are central to our mission. Horizons at Foote engages in respectful partnerships with families to narrow education and opportunity gaps. Through our joint efforts, we nurture a sense of belonging in each member of our community. We embrace diversity in staffing, leadership, and governance so that students see themselves in the adults they interact with. Our curriculum honors the communities from which our students are drawn, and our social-emotional learning celebrates the similarities we share in our emotional responses to the world around us. Horizons at Foote began in 2015. Our program started with grades K, 1, and 2 - we now serve K-8 and two grades of high school students through Horizons Best Foote Forward (BFF), our high school mentoring program. The foundation of Horizons at Foote is our six-week summer program for students in grades K-8. Our project-based educational model is designed to fuel a lifelong passion for learning, blending high-quality academics with cultural enrichment and confidence-building activities like swimming, music and sports. In small classes led by professional teachers, students dive into a rich curriculum with a focus on literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts & Math). Our summer program is supplemented by regular school year activities for students and families. We make a 9-year commitment; students attend the program every summer from kindergarten to the summer after their eighth grade, building continuity of experience, expectations, relationships, and skill development.
