Network Capacity Support Coordinator VISTA at The Hub

The West Virginia Community Development Hub supports West Virginians with the tools and training they need to lead and spark positive change in their hometowns and across our state. Our purpose is to coach volunteer community leadership teams to help them build sustained development in rural communities; and grow the overall community economic development system in West Virginia through collaborative partnerships that use innovative approaches to address systemic challenges for rural development. In 2022, The Hub launched an initiative to research barriers to West Virginia communities accessing funding and identify potential solutions to address these barriers. The research included a series of over 100 interviews with practitioners and current/potential grantees across the state, and deep relationship-building with federal agency partners and regional/national networks that were dedicated to address these persistent barriers to access. The level of interest and engagement in this project exceeded our expectations and took the work in some unexpected directions that we hope to catalyze on and continue in 2023. Through this, we have identified that there is a significant opportunity and a growing need to remove the barriers that exist between communities in need of funding and the agencies that want to fund meaningful development projects. The Hub firmly believes that when these barriers to rural communities accessing funding are remediated, local economies will begin to thrive. The results of this will be wide sweeping, including the revitalization of downtowns, job and business creation, and swelling community pride. This project builds capacity in organizations and institutions beyond The Hub, creating wide-sweeping impacts throughout West Virginia and beyond. By taking an approach in which we walk alongside our network of communities and partner organizations, this project will seek to sustainably drive meaningful investment into the state.
