Inclusive Community Planning in Low-Income Baltimore

Many community and non-profit organizations are dedicated to improving their communities to reduce poverty and improve the well-being of residents. Community-led planning and design is a key part of building consensus around project goals and securing financial support from foundations and other funders. The Neighborhood Design Center offers pro bono planning, capacity building, conceptual design, and community engagement services for plans and projects of all sizes—from neighborhood planning reports, to public art installations, to Safe Routes to School strategies. The services we provide enable our partners to better galvanize support from community residents as they seek to bring increased resources to their historically disinvested communities. This VISTA program is an initiative within the Neighborhood Design Center’s volunteer-supported Community Design Works program to develop resources that help expand participation by low-income residents in Baltimore for design and planning projects. The VISTA service member position combines research, writing, and outreach support to enhance effective engagement for planning and design projects during the service year and creating training materials and documentation that can help sustain more inclusive outreach and engagement by NDC staff, volunteers, and partners.
