TMA MC Academic Coaching for Course and College Success

The Academic Coaching for Course and College Success VISTA project is focused on several capacity-building projects for the Achieving the Promise Academy, Montgomery College’s academic coaching program. The Achieving the Promise Academy was created in 2016 following a collegewide taskforce convened to develop strategies and scale existing programs that would close the “achievement gap” and promote student success, especially for students historically marginalized and underserved in higher education. Today, ATPA supports over 12,000 students annually with embedded Academic Coaching in 500+ sections of the highest-enrolled courses required for completion that historically have been the hardest for students to pass, as well as 450+ students who work with personal Academic Coaching for college success until graduation and/or transfer. Academic coaching is a powerful and distinct approach to student success, where coaches use evidence-based strategies to proactively help students reflect on their academic performance and goals, create personal success plans, and persist in mastering necessary academic content and skills.

Member Duties : The VISTA will support the continued implementation of the College’s new scheduling and success tracking software, a project in its second year. VISTA will oversee the project’s continued implementation, helping improve data collection for targeted student outreach and assessment, as well as the ability to more proactively offer specific coaching services to students who would benefit from them. The VISTA will implement and update training materials for coaches, supporting enhanced student access to ATPA’s academic coaching at MC. The VISTA will also be tasked with supporting student-friendly marketing that would help students with the ability to access our coaching services. VISTA will create and launch a series of on-demand workshops and resources supporting students’ academic skills, sense of belonging, and successful completion of academic goals at MC, in an effort to increase student access to academic coaching supports, especially for our online-only students.
