Community Engagement & Events Coordinator VISTA

**UWKC AmeriCorps members must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the first day of service.** Help facilitate community connections by doing outreach in local communities and organizing a series of events, including cultural community-specific events, in Hunger Intervention Program (HIP)’s service area. The objectives of this initiative are to: Create places and spaces for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities to gather, celebrate, and build community: Organize events to provide cooking/nutrition: strengthen HIP’s connections with local BIPOC communities. HIP operates in a neighborhood the city of Seattle has identified as having low access to opportunities and high displacement risk due to gentrification. The most recent 2020 census identifies the Lake City and Northgate neighborhoods, where most of HIP’s program participants reside, as some of the most diverse neighborhoods in Seattle. This VISTA project fights poverty by connecting underserved populations with supplemental food resources and nutrition education. This helps families stretch their dollars and live healthier lives with fewer resources being spent on healthcare. This project also helps build community by creating more spaces for BIPOC communities to gather, celebrate and share resources.

Member Duties : Organize community kitchen events in partnership with different Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities that create a space for gathering, community building, sharing meals, and nutrition/cooking classes. These events will strengthen the Hunger Intervention Program’s connections with local BIPOC communities and offer culturally specific nutrition/cooking education, meals, and resources with the goal of increasing food security. Lead various outreach events and community celebrations, including HIP’s Community Appreciation Event, Lake City Summer Festival, End-of-Summer Festival, Pumpkin Palooza, and Winter Fest. Coordinate recreational and educational events for children, youth, and parents to participate in throughout the summer months in collaboration with HIP’s summer meals team.
