PCCE- Gettysburg College

Our mission is to prepare students from across the nation and around the globe to pursue lives of personal and professional fulfillment and to engage the complex questions of our time through effective leadership and socially responsible citizenship. One of the most pressing issues of our time is the sustainability of our environment, and we recognize our collective responsibility as stewards of the environment to come together with community partners for the central purpose of making our region a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable place. The South Mountain Partnership, an alliance of citizens, businesses, non-profits, academic institutions, and government agencies, is preparing a State of the Region Report Card. This regional scale planning document will identify metrics that demonstrate environmental health and provide context on how the region currently is doing and identify opportunities for improvement. Utilizing the Report findings, the VISTA member will develop presentations and curricula to help the public 1) understand the current conditions and 2) have the data and context necessary to protect and enhance public health. The VISTA will organize community conversations, where volunteers will utilize the curricula to present the report and facilitate discussions on needed course corrections to ensure a more sustainable future. The VISTA member will also work on building other partnerships between the college and the community, engaging the South Mountain Partnership’s network of over 40 partners, including potential projects with the Watershed Alliance of Adams County and the Land Conservancy of Adams County.
