Cross Over Community Development-Development&Communications

Cross Over Community Development (COCD) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization based in Dayton that was incorporated in the State of Ohio on April 8, 2016. COCD was created to support the integration of immigrants and refugees through advocacy, direct services, and family mentoring. Our mission is to function as a resource center for immigrants and refugees. We are committed to advocating, educating, and facilitating connections to help immigrant and refugee families achieve and maintain self-sufficiency and successfully integrate and participate in their new communities. Therefore, we endeavor to address the language barriers faced by immigrants and refugees, cultural shock, low education or unmatched education, culturally inappropriate social and life skills, limited or nontransferable job skills. We assist in improving their living conditions and other social issues like poor living environments in high crime neighborhoods that complicate their integration. COCD carries out a wide range of activities and services under two programs: #1. Education: the program comprises English as Second Language (ESL) classes for all levels, preparation for General Equivalence Diploma and College Readiness. In ESL, besides the normal classes for literacy, we use culturally responsive methodologies to develop some oral competencies for low literate students before attempting to transition into reading and writing. #2. Mentoring: we provide family mentoring services at small-scale, wrap around case management (individualized plan of care); we assist refugees and immigrants’ families for acquisition of basic social skills, cultural competence, and life skills for navigating healthcare services and other social services. We also help to identify basic needs and connect populations to charities such as food banks for related assistance.
