Police Accountability Fellow - NDS, CA, NLADA

Because the quality of justice in America should not depend on how much money a person has, National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) leads public defenders, community advocates, and civil attorneys to advance justice and expand opportunity for all by promoting excellent delivery of legal services for people who cannot afford counsel. NLADA’s AmeriCorps VISTA program, Defending Communities in Service, builds sustainable community relationships, data systems, and practices that allow public defender offices to more holistically support communities in need with a strong focus on racial equity. In this position, NLADA has partnered with Neighborhood Defender Services, Inc to build out a national capacity for public defenders. NDS pioneered a holistic defense model when they opened in 1990 in Harlem and today, they have expanded holistic services to Detroit, San Antonio, and LA. Each client has a full team fighting on their behalf, including criminal and civil attorneys, family defense attorneys, advocates, social workers, investigators, paralegals, and interns. Beyond the courtroom, NDS advocates for policy changes to bring justice to their communities and hosts frequent education and outreach events to support its neighbors. In this role, you’ll join this team to strengthen impact litigation and policy around police accountability through outreach to community members, event planning, and communications. This position should be held by someone who is passionate about connecting community and the legal profession.
