Veteran Outreach and Engagement VISTA

As an APIA VISTA, you will work in tandem with a dynamic service team to engage and build collaborative partnerships in the Aleutian and Bristol Bay regions of Alaska. Our prevention and health education nest of projects requires a high degree of community outreach and engagement. So, if this excites you, you will find your talents and skills well suited in our social service agency! The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, Inc. is the federally recognized tribal organization of the Aleut people in Alaska. Our Mission is to: provide self-sufficiency an independence of the Unangan/Unangas by advocacy, training, technical assistance and economic enhancement; To assist in meeting the health, safety and well-being needs of each Unangan/Unangas community; To promote, strengthen and ensure the unity of the Unangan; and To strengthen and preserve Unangaxˆ cultural heritage. Operating under the mission and values of our organization, the Youth Services program, under which this placement will be operating; is tasked with providing services that decrease mental health stigma through rural community prevention activities and increase interest in health and behavioral health career pathways. If interested and you would like to learn more about our programming in detail, please visit: Youth Program | Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (apiai.org).

Member Duties : Through outreach, the VISTA’s year will focus on and garnish interest and sustainable investments for suicide and substance misuse prevention activities. Specifically, the VISTA will propel community outreach and education within the SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant for veterans, active duty service members and their families. Activities will also include recording and tracking data and development of community-based partnerships to increase rural veteran access to the VA healthcare system and other agencies providing support services for individuals at-risk for suicide in the Aleutian region. They will increase awareness and provide education on the VA healthcare system and other related military supports and benefits therein. A growing body of literature documents the relationship between suicide and socioeconomic variables, such as poverty, financial crisis, indebtedness and unemployment. Promoting suicide prevention and healthy lifestyles is key to uplifting people out of poverty.
